Lighting Up Opportunity.

Who We Are

As a social enterprise, Northern Lights Mentorship Group is all about building. With our trades sector and employment partners, we give young adults who have been shut out of the employment market opportunities to develop the confidence, skills, and experience to build their lives and our community.

The revenue generated by our trades and labour services funds our programming.

Our Mentors

Northern Lights Mentorship Group mentors possess a rare combination of expertise in the trades along with the ability to motivate, inspire, and guide others towards success. Our mentors have certified trainer or Red Seal journeyman status and oversee our participants throughout their learning and hands-on experience. What all of our mentors have in common is a passion for helping others change their lives.

Our Participants

Our participants are young adults aged 18-35 who are keen to improve their lives through training in the trades. Most of our graduates came to Northern Lights Mentorship Group with little or no experience in the trades and many struggled with getting and maintaining employment. Unlike some other training programs, we don’t have complex entry requirements or eligibility criteria. We look for attitude before aptitude. Our participants come to us through referral from our employment partners or by contacting us directly.

Todd Mackay, Founder and CEO

Todd grew up in Manitoba, first in Winnipeg and then in the town of Birtle. As an avid hockey player, he had the opportunity to play junior hockey, every Canadian boy's dream. When his playing career ended, Todd returned to Brandon to pursue university. His early professional life took him to Calgary and spanned positions in finance and banking, later moving into sales as a business partner. Following a successful career in industry, Todd returned to Winnipeg to pursue new challenges.

The game of hockey has been a lifelong passion of Todd's. He continues to coach at the elite and recreational levels and is involved in many aspects of the sport. In 2012 while coaching a novice (7-8 yrs) Norquay Knights team, Todd was inspired to start the Northern Lights Mentorship Group, which he did in 2015. Todd’s own experience demonstrated the significant influence positive coaching and team sport can have on young lives. He believed he could apply the same principles to help young adults facing difficult challenges succeed in the workplace.
